At just 26, Summer Jansen has already carved out a name for herself in the world of interior design, running her own firm, Summer Design Haus. Her unique blend of modern and vintage styles, combined with an entrepreneurial spirit, has quickly garnered attention and praise from clients. In this interview, we dive into Summer’s design journey, her creative process, and the elements that set her work apart.
1. What was the first space you ever designed, and how did it reflect your personality and design vision at that stage of your career?
"The first place I ever designed was my own home," Summer reflects. "My mom was renovating the place to give it a fresh interior, so I went with large format marble tiles for the floors and a mink-colored wall. It was back in the early 2010s, but I’d say it’s still pretty fresh in today’s current designs!" From the beginning, Summer’s eye for timelessness shone through—creating spaces that feel relevant no matter the decade.
2. If you could describe your design style as a specific room or environment, what would it be, and how does that space represent your own taste and personality?
"I try not to limit my abilities by categorizing my style into one," Summer explains. "I think a true designer should be able to do it all since design is constantly evolving." At present, Summer is drawn to Art Deco and Mid-Century styles, with her personal workspace—a loft—blending contemporary and vintage pieces seamlessly. This fluidity in style speaks to her versatility, allowing her to craft spaces that are as eclectic and dynamic as her own tastes.
3. Every designer has a trademark that sets them apart—what is the one design element or detail you always incorporate, and why is it significant to you?
"My knowledge of vintage pieces always transpires into every project," she says. Summer's passion for sourcing rare, one-of-a-kind furniture adds an artistic layer to her work. She’s a frequent shopper at places like Sputnik Modern in Dallas, where she finds these distinctive pieces. "In my opinion, furniture is art, and you should always incorporate uniquely shaped pieces into your home to create visual interest." This signature touch elevates her designs and brings personality into each project.
4. How has your approach to interior design evolved over time, and what personal experiences have had the biggest influence on your style?
"My approach to design has evolved as I’ve learned from previous employers," she shares. But since launching her own firm, Summer’s perspective has expanded beyond aesthetics. "This career is primarily revolving around customer service and sales. I believe that making your client happy and developing personal relationships can make the project an enjoyable process for each side." This client-focused approach has become central to the way she runs Summer Design Haus, ensuring that the design process is as smooth as the final product is beautiful.
5. Is there a unique habit or ritual you rely on when conceptualizing a new space, and how does that practice help shape your creative direction?
As a highly visual person, Summer’s ideas flow right from the start. "I really like doing quick sketches in my sketchbook," she notes. "It’s nice to draw pen to paper, even if it’s just lines, because that can spark new ideas!" This tactile approach helps her transform early concepts into fully realized designs, adding an organic layer to her creative process.
Building a Design Empire
Summer’s design journey isn’t just about crafting beautiful spaces—it’s also about building a business from the ground up. "There’s a lot of backend work to a design firm to make sure it runs smoothly—finance, branding, marketing, accounting—are all hats I’m wearing now, on top of designing," she explains. Yet, she’s embraced the challenge, and the success of Summer Design Haus speaks for itself.
Owning her own firm was always a goal for Summer, and at just 26, she’s already achieved it. "It feels incredible to be able to create something from the ground up, and I encourage anyone who has the opportunity to take it," she says with a smile.
